Weeks	Introduction and Basic Concepts; introduction to the course, its aims and learning outcomes, definition and importance of field music collection, place and historical development of field research in ethnomusicology, musical culture, musical behaviour and context concepts, different musical genres and cultural expressions.

Weeks	Preparation for Field Research and Ethical Principles; creating research questions and literature review, choosing the research area and communicating with the community, informed consent and confidentiality principles, cultural sensitivity and elimination of bias, research plan and time management.

Weeks	Qualitative Research Methods and Their Relation to Music; observation (participatory and non-participatory observation), interview techniques (structured, semi-structured, unstructured), focus group interviews, narrative analysis and musical stories, autoethnography and the connection of personal experiences with music.
4. Weeks	Music Recording Techniques and Equipment; types of sound recording devices and microphones, preparation of the recording environment and acoustic considerations, stereo and mono recording techniques, video recording techniques and visual documentation, considerations and possible problems during recording, backing up and archiving of recordings.
5. Weeks	Music Transcription and Analysis (Introduction), importance and different methods of music transcription, basics of melodic and rhythmic transcription, computer-aided transcription software (introduction), simple musical analysis methods (form, structure, motif, etc.)

Weeks	Performance Analysis and Contextual Assessment, social, cultural and economic context of musical performance, performance venues, participants and interactions, music in rituals, ceremonies and festivals, the relationship of music to gender, age and status, the role of music in identity and belonging.
7. Weeks	Term Evaluation and Field Research Project Introduction; review and discussion of topics covered up to the term; presentation of field research projects by students and receiving feedback, elaboration of project plans and ethical approval processes.
