Method development for the determination of bisphenol derivatives in beverages in the Turkish market and analysis of products on the market

Prof. Dr. Saniye Özcan, who contributed to the field with her study on method development for the determination of bisphenol derivatives in beverages in the Turkish market and analysis of the products in the market, has Prof. Dr. Nafiz Öncü Can, Lecturer Dr. Serkan Levent and Ülfet Erdoğan Uzunoğlu in her research team.

Bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are known endocrine disrupting chemicals commonly used to produce polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins and thermal papers. BPS finds application in a wide range of consumer products, including epoxy resins, lacquers, varnishes, primers, adhesives and plastics. BPS is detected in many everyday products such as pipes, toothpaste, food packaging material and personal care products (e.g. shower gels, hair care products, makeup and lotions). In addition, in everyday life, BPA is widely used in baby food, baby bottles, the lining of canned food and beverages, dental implants and sales receipts.

In this study, a new analysis method was developed for the analysis of BPA, BPS and BPF in drinking water, soft drinks (carbonated, non-carbonated and cold canned coffee) and traditional beverages (turnip, molasses) in Turkish markets. With the developed method, 59 types of beverages and 16 bottled waters, excluding alcoholic and dairy products, offered for public consumption in markets and grocery stores were analyzed for the first time. Bisphenol derivatives were found to be present in 2 drinking water and 26 beverages, and their amount was determined in 6 beverages. Based on these results, the researchers emphasized the necessity of developing production technologies and making inspections according to the warnings of current legislation and scientific studies in terms of public health.

Although most researchers have focused on BPA analysis, other bisphenol analogs require single or simultaneous analysis. The major shortcoming of these methods is that they are not easy to use and not accessible in all laboratories. In this context, it is necessary to focus on monitoring data faster. Every year, more and more BPS and BPFs are produced in the industry and exposure is increasing. Therefore, when performing BPA analyses on a variety of samples, the determination of BPS and BPF together is critical for analysis efficiency.
